Nanao Ise is the co-lieutenant of the First Division of the Gotei 13, under Captain Shunsui Kyōraku, and Vice-President of the Shinigami Women's Association.
A member of the Ise Clan, a family of Shinto Priests, Nanao's parents died when she was young and she was raised by distant relatives. She entered the Shin'ō Academy and despite lacking the ability to imprint on herAsauchi, her prowess in Kidō allowed her to graduate and become a member of the Gotei 13, initially joining the Eighth Division. She then moved across the the First Division with her captain following the death of the previous Captain-Commander. During the Wandenreich invasion of the Soul King Palace, Nanao begs Captain Kyōraku to return the Ise Clan Zanpakutō to her despite the Curse associated with it so that she can help in the battle and fights Lille Barro.
